9th May 1974: Sam arrives in Oakland, California, leaping into the body of magician Harry Spontini in the middle of his stage act at the Blue Mambo Nightclub. After surviving death by swords, and successfully cutting his assistant, his twelve-year old daughter Jamie, in half, Sam learns that the two of them are auditioning for a chance to win $35,000 on Bill Bixby’s television show, ‘The Magician’. However, their chances for a successful future change dramatically when Sam finds himself caught in the middle of a custody battle: three years ago, Harry’s estranged wife, Maggie, ran out on him and Jamie; now, Maggie has returned with her new fiancé, a ruthless lawyer named Steve Slater – and she is demanding a divorce and the rights to her child…
